Annual Gift for Life Block Walk

The Orlando Chapter of Sisters Network Incorporated plans for its annual block walk in an African American community during the month of October.  This outreach program of Sisters Network Incorporated is a cooperative effort with the Orlando chapter and community groups to provide breast health awareness in the community. Since its inception in Orlando (2005), the chapter members have walked the streets in many Central Florida African American neighborhoods. The block walk is a door to door canvass with a survivor and volunteer talking to women residents about breast cancer awareness and distribute breast health pamphlets.

Our block walk record over the years has made an impact in Central Florida as follows:

• Canvass communities in Winter Park, Orlando, Winter Garden and Apopka
• Providing breast health pamphlets and information to 2500 homes
• Perform on-site mammograms to uninsured residents,  when mobile unit is available and provide mammogram resource information
• On-site medical professionals to perform numerous health screenings e.g. such as, blood sugar, HBP (High Blood Pressure), BMI (Body Mass Index), and Cholesterol, etc.
• Connecting attendees with many other medical and community agencies
• Inviting medical professionals to provide updates and current facts concerning about breast cancer
• Providing free lunch to participants

The Orlando Chapter  of Sisters Network has reaped many benefits also from each block walk such as:

•     Increasing our chapter membership
•     Received financial donation and support from businesses and community groups
•     Educated area residents about breast cancer and other health issues
•     Partnering with on-site mammogram providers who advocate for early detection
•     Expanded the public’s awareness about Sisters Network Orlando

Every year the Orlando Chapter is excited as we plan our Gift for Life Block Walk. We are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.  Donations are encouraged and accepted.  If you are interested in hosting our block walk, please contact us.
